Aromatherapy Candles: a witchy guide for mood, ritual & everyday calm
Share
Step into the New Forest, light a wick, and let the room soften. Aromatherapy candles are more than a pretty glow, they’re an easy, everyday ritual to shift mood, set intention, and invite a little magic into your space.
What are aromatherapy candles?
An aromatherapy candle is a scented candle made with pure essential oils (from plants) rather than only synthetic fragrance oils. When the wax melts, the aroma diffuses, creating an ambience that can feel uplifting, grounding or soothing, depending on the oils chosen. At New Forest Apothecary, we blend plant-based waxes with essential oils and a pinch of witchy intention for a clean, gentle burn.
Do aromatherapy candles work?
Short answer: yes, if you’re after mood and atmosphere. Scents communicate directly with the brain’s emotional centre, which is why lavender can feel calming, citrus feels bright, and rosemary feels clarifying. They’re not medicines, but they’re brilliant for nudging the vibe - perfect for meditation, bath-time, journalling or spellwork.
Are aromatherapy candles safe?
They’re safe when used sensibly:
- Burn on a heat-resistant surface, away from draughts, pets and little hands.
- Keep the wick trimmed to 5mm; extinguish after 3–4 hours.
- Ventilate lightly if you’re sensitive to scent.
- Choose plant waxes (soy, rapeseed, coconut) and cotton or FSC-wood wicks.
- Be cautious around pets, some essential oils aren’t suitable for them.
Can you use “aromatherapy oils” in candles?
Only if they’re pure essential oils or candle-safe fragrance oils. Many bottles labelled “aromatherapy oil” are pre-diluted massage blends (with carrier oils) and aren’t suitable for candle making.

How to make aromatherapy soy candles at home (simple method)
If you fancy a little kitchen alchemy:
- Melt 200 g soy wax to 75 °C.
- Cool to 60-65 °C, then stir in essential oils at 3-6% of wax weight (6–12 g total; go lower with stronger oils).
- Wick your jar (cotton or wood wick sized for the jar).
-
Pour at 55–60 °C. Leave 48 hours to cure, trim wick, then test-burn.
Tip: Essential oils are subtler than fragrance oils - create blends for better “throw”.
Candles and aromatherapy: when to choose a diffuser
Love a stronger, immediate scent or want a Yankee Candle–style aromatherapy diffuser effect? Use a water/ultrasonic diffuser with essential oils. Prefer a softer, flame-lit ritual? Choose a candle. Many of our customers pair both: diffuser for daytime clarity, candle for evening calm.
